Music for Young Voices

Children may begin taking voice lessons as young as 8 years old. As Mrs. Jorgenson is the Young Voice Specialist for the Drake University Community School of Music, she has created a unique program designed specifically for growing voices. When enrolled in the Young Voice program, children will learn basic singing techniques such as proper breathing, posture and stage presence. They will also study basic piano skills and aural and written music theory. Students will learn the basics of sight reading vocal lines and will have the opportunity to perform wonderful music in different languages!

Special Music for Special Kids!
Each child is special and every child has completely different needs. Alec was an 8 year old with autism. Although he was able to carry on basic conversations, he was unable to express feelings of excitement, happiness, sadness or fear. Alec loved airplanes. Although he had a difficult time focusing on his studies, he knew everything there was to know about planes. So, while running through the yard with our arms out like airplanes, Alec and I played copycat with our voices. When the plane went up in the air, we said "HIGH!" in a very high voice and as the plane was coming in for landing, we sang, "LOW, LOWER, LOWER," on a descending scale. Eventually, we worked this intonation into sentences. Now, with this music therapy, Alec has discovered that he can express his feelings not only with his words, but also with facial expressions and vocal inflection!

Not Just Music
Students in the Children with Special Needs program will have the opportunity to experience music in multiple ways. Some children learn best by just listening, some by singing songs while they play, some by drawing pictues to music and others by acting out the words they sing!
